You may have heard the old saying: "Everyone wants to do OSINT until it's time to go do OSINT stuff". If that's not a saying, it should be. On the surface, Open Source Intelligence gathering sounds fun and super cool.
Picture this: You're sitting alone in your apartment. Lights dimmed. The glow from your laptop illuminates a face framed by a black hooded sweatshirt. Soon, secrets will reveal themselves to you. Truths never meant to be known. Fingers rest on your keyboard. You exhale. And begin typing in Google...."
And that's about as far as most people get on their OSINT journey.
OSINT collection is hard and is even harder to get started in when you have no idea where to begin. This is where Joe's Introduction to People OSINT course comes in.
Joe has split his four hour course up in to one part lecture and one part practical demonstration.
The lecture portion walks you through:
- What OSINT is.
- What OSINT isn't.
- Where to get started with People OSINT and where/how to pivot once you get started.
- How the different pieces of information you'll find connect together and how those pieces can lead to more information.
- Survey of tools you'll find helpful during your OSINT collection.
- And a discussion tools you won't find useful.
The practical portion:
- Applies the topics and tools above in real time on a real missing person.
- Allows you to see how Joe troubleshoots and problem solves along the way.
- Gives you insight in to the connections you should be looking for in an actual social media environment.
- This portion is 100% unscripted. This is not a "walk through" or a "demo". The instructor is doing this live in front of you just like you would be doing.
The two portions above combine to give you an amazing understanding of the people OSINT process in a very short period of time.
People OSINT collection is all about connecting dots. In this case, the "dots" are a person's presence on various social media platforms. The amazing part about this course is you get to see the instructor make those connections (not just explain them) in real time.
Did I mention it's interactive? The students are working along with the instructor to gather information. They are submitting information they've found to paint or more complete picture of a missing person. Joe is simultaneously collecting OSINT, incorporating the findings of others in to his investigation and answering questions in the group chat. Very impressive and speaks to his knowledge and mastery of the subject matter.
If you're even a little interested in OSINT collection I highly recommend this course. In fact, even if you're NOT interested you should take this course if only to learn how your own social media presences could be discovered and explored.
